Orkut on Symbian 60 Phone Rocks !!

Orkut is the most popular social networking website in India and it has a really huge market share. But that hasn’t made them sit on their laurels and do nothing. Orkut has been improving each day and the newest improvement to Orkut comes for Symbian 60 users. Today, I happened to use Orkut on a Nokia N81 and it really rocks.

orkut1   orkut2

It’s been a few days that Google launched a new Orkut for the S60 users and I heard the news earlier, but today I really played with it. And I was blown by the simplicity and usability of the interface. Its simple, intuitive and fast. Even with the slow GPRS connections that we have in India, it was as fast as anything you would be using on a desktop. The photo upload obviously very slow, but having an upload interface on a mobile device is pretty cool. You can update your album with the photograph you just clicked and show off your fun-trips to your social network while you are having fun...

The following are some new features:

1.) Photo uploads (Upload photos as soon as you took them from your mobile)

2.) Picture galleries (Look at orkut albums in a more streamlined and cell-like resolution)

3.) Click-to-call (Call friends from Orkut page)

4.) Quick friend searches.

If you have a Symbian 60 phone, what are you waiting for?? Enjoy your social network by going to http://m.orkut.com

Google’s Virtual World: Google Lively

If you are one of those guys whose social life is only on the Internet, then this will probably make you more excited than any other social networking website ever. Google has launched a nice browser-based virtual world called Lively where users can interact with other users in different virtual spaces. Its more like Second Life, with much less 3D but with more faster environment.

Lively is an addon for Firefox or Internet Explorer and can be installed on only Windows XP or Vista. There is no addon installer for OSX or Linux. Lively allows you to create an avataar and after the avataar is done, you can goto any of the rooms or create your own room and interact with your friends or other users on lively. While creating a room there are different kinds of stuff that you can put into a room, much like what you did in the Sims game.

The installer can be downloaded from here. The installers size is small, but its an online installer that downloads required files from the Internet. One major advantage that Lively has over Second Life is that it is browser based and will not required great hardware to run. On the other hand, Second Life is lot more interactive and can use graphics hardware to render 3D worlds. From the early looks at Lively, its aimed towards a larger audience compared to Second Life. This Lively vs Second Life comparison is analogous to casual games Vs Hardcore games.

A video introduction to Google Lively:

Currently Google Lively doesn’t seem very interactive. But I’m sure as time goes on, it will become more interactive. Users will be able to do different activities with other users and interact freely with the environment. Even the environment has the possibilities of different object interaction and it could very well be like an multiplayer online game of Sims. Lively also has great prospects of being monetized, where user can see advertisements for the products that he likes and can be used as a marketing tool by different companies. Excellent idea that definitely has promise!!

Dress Up Orkut With Themes

Orkut is one of the big social networks on the web. With other social networks evolving everyday, Orkut doesn't want to be left behind in the race. And with this in mind, Orkut has added a new feature of "Themes". Themes allow users to change the look-and-feel of the scrapbook, profile pages. Earlier users had to use 3rd-party JavaScript (with GreaseMonkey only on Firefox)  to use custom-themes, but now Google has added themes for everyone to enjoy.

Orkut currently shows only 4 themes:

Spring Theme:

Orkut-Spring-Theme

Country Theme:

Orkut-Country-Theme

Beach Theme:

Orkut-Beach-Theme

and the Classic Blue Theme...

You can also disable the themes if you wish... You will also be allowed to create your own themes and just like Orkut apps these will be downloadable and sharable with your friends. Themes have not been rolled out to all the users, but will take a few more weeks to be shown to all the users. Just like the success of Orkut Apps gave an opportunity to developers, Orkut Themes will give designers a chance to monetize their skills.

The Scrapkut Worm Running Loose on Orkut

I'm sure a lot of Orkut users have seen the image shown below in their scrapbooks or their friend's scrap book. If you have seen it, then hold your temptation. Do not click on it because although it may seem to you like a YouTube video, its actually link that downloads a worm. The worm now known as the W32.Scrapkut by Symantec has created that scrap and wants to spread itself through your friendly orkut network.

Scrapkut

Symantec's website dug deeper into the worm and explains on how the worm intends to spread itself.

When a victim clicks on the link, they are redirected to an external site which prompts them to download the file “flashx_player_9.8.0.exe”. When executed, flashx_player_9.8.0.exe retrieves the files windosremote.exe, logservicess.exe and win32chekupdate.exe from http://[REMOVED].ifastnet.com. These files download additional files that perform a variety of malicious actions, but logservicess.exe is the main executable for further propagation. Logservicess.exe first copies itself as maindwxp.exe to four different locations on the system to ensure it is executed on startup.... [read more]

Hopefully you have not yet succumbed to the temptation and clicked the image. The problem is not just for you, but for all your friends on the orkut network. And if you have already experienced the worm, pass on the info to your friends so that they don't get infected. Social networks is going to be the next big target for hackers and worm writers. Tread with caution is the best advice at the moment!!

NewsPond - A Sleek Looking Techmeme + Digg

I'm not a big fan of bling and show, but sometimes some things make you realize that "sleek" feels great. A few days back I came across a website Newspond Newspond.com, which is an automated news engine like Techmeme, but with a lot more oomph attached to it. Infact, I have to say that I'm completely in awe with the design of the website and every edge looks well polished.

Now before you think that I have been paid to talk good about these guys, let me assure you that is not the case. I will first talk about the bad things I've seen at the web site. I have seen some downsides with the news aggregator algorithm that they seem to use. Some news just come above others because of the comments and hence you can actually write spam comments and get the stories higher. Even the indexing of the websites from which stories are shown is not very fast and generally stories take some time to appear at Newspond. May be I am comparing it with Techmeme.com here, but techmeme is a river and this is a pond right ??

But when you consider the look and feel of the website, you tend to forget if the stories appear a little late. Chan Karunamuni needs to be applauded for the brilliant design that he has done on the website. His portfolio shows some of his previous designs and speaks of his skills with the bling. The animations with javascript are great and you can turn off the animations if you are on a low-end computer. Ian Reardon, the other founder of the website has also done a good job with the stories that automatically appear on the website. All the digg-like code where users can comment on stories and give their own views is also good work from Ian.

In the world of Web 2.0 where people share stories, talk about other people's stories on their own blogs, finding different views on a story can be very useful. That's what Web 2.0 is all about. Newspond truly gives you a gorgeous view of the entire blogosphere (as a pond)...

Google Already Does What Wikia's Trying - Social Search

It wasn't all that long back when everyone was disappointed with Wikia's launch of alpha search. With Wikia Search everyone was expecting it be a Google killer from day one and the disappointment was made very public by a lot of tech bloggers. At that time, I thought that it was a little harsh of everyone to be criticizing something so "alpha". But I guess the Web is now v2.0, its growing rather rapidly and people can't wait for social evolutions any more.

Give Social Search Some Time

Wikia Search is about social searching where people search for a specific keyword, follow links, vote for good search results and the contribute a small relevant mini-article. Darwin realized it long back that evolution is slow and made the world know about it. Social evolutions in behaviour patterns are even slower... Then why in the world would anyone think social search will start working from day one?? The success of social networking in the last 2-3 years may be the primary reason where people have started to expect faster growth from social phenomena on the web. But the reason for success was that people did not change their behaviour. They just got a completely new experience since social networking didn't exist earlier.

Search on the other hand already exists and people are behaviorally already accustomed to using algorithmic search. Better web users can already think of good keywords and get their results google'd (since that's a verb these days). So really, Wikia or for that matter social search will take its own time to grow. And if I were to predict, after it matures it'll be better than algorithmic search.

Google understands Social Search

I performed 3 tests over a period of a 30 days and have come to the conclusion that Google performs Social Search, but seems to be a little confused on how much priority it needs to give to social valuations.

Test 1 (Google Reader & Feedburner): I created 6 blogs with the same content and kept posting and pinging the Google BlogSearch equally. Each blog was updated daily at the same time from the same location. But I subscribed different users to the feeds differently using feedburner and google reader. Initially without any feed subscribers, all the blogs would randomly appear above/below each other for a week. After a week, with different number of subscribers, I found that Google would display that blog first which has more number of feed subscribers. Thus Google very well knows which blogs have more subscribers and displays those in the result higher than the others.

Test 2 (Search Result Clicking): This was a weird one to detect. I found that sites which are clicked more in the results got the better ranking in the future. But this was not a general higher ranking in the search results. I observed that it was only limited to that IP subnet where the clicks were made. It meant that Google was able to understand which sites the user visits and hence brings it above others in the search results.

Test 3 (Orkut & GTalk Contacts): Google's social networking site Orkut was my next target. Considering orkut scraps and communities weren't part of Google's index, I didnt think they would have any effect, but I was surprised!! I couldn't spam a lot of friends with the blog links, but I did some in communities which had foolish admin's accepting me as a member. I spammed about 200 communities with the blog links and found a change in the search results. These weren't as straightforward and sometimes the higher ranking would be lost and would come back again at times. But there were more times when pages with orkut links ranked higher.

When I did similar spams with Gtalk contact though none of sites changed. They were still random in the results.

Random Observations:

  • Blogger/Blogspot sites ranked higher: Initially I didn't realize this, but later found out about 2 weeks into the testing that Google was ranking blogger/blogspot sites higher in the results. It was surprising at first, but then I found out that Blogspot's subdomain had a higher ranking. Other blogs that are subdomained to good domains also had a similar effect. The conclusion I reached is that Google seems to be checking the domain name first and then its content. Even if the subdomain name was more apt to the search keyword, Google cared more about the domain name.
  • Knol could be the missing link: I have not tested Knol yet, but it could be the primary decision maker for the Google's engine on social search. Knol articles and the links it mentions could be more valuable because Google has stated that Knol articles are expected to come from experts on any given subject.
  • Gmail could also be used: I tried sending lots of emails (16000 in all) with blog links. None of it had an effect :( I think Google could use it very effectively to improve search results. But I guess there could be some privacy concerns with that happening, although Google already has the rights to index our emails in the EULA for Gmail.

The tests are completely my own observations and are limited in resources (6 blogs) and time (30 days). But they give us a slight indication that Google may be social searching already. How much they rely on it is completely unknown and will be unknown forever... Google already knows so much about society on the Internet that they are probably the only company (with enough resources) that can accelerate social search and implement it successfully today!!

The Tech Connection Of Web Celebrities

Lists are a human way to organize their lives. And so, Forbes (the guys who are known for their lists) have just put out another list for everyone to look at. And this time the list is about 25 most popular web celebrities. It is always interesting to look at lists, but this one is more interesting since it features a lot of tech guys and tech bloggers.

The Web Celeb 25

1. Perez Hilton (Mario Lavandeira)
2. Michael Arrington *
3. Mark Frauenfelder *
4. Seth Godin
5. Cory Doctorow *
6. Matt Drudge

8. Mark Zuckerberg *
9. Harry Knowles
10. Robert Scoble *
11. Frank Warren
12. Om Malik *
13. Will Leitch
14. Jeff Jarvis
15. Kevin Rose *
16. Kathy Sierra *
17. Fake Steve Jobs (Dan Lyons) *

You can read the list and some detail about the web celebrities on Forbes.com

If you look at the list, all the guys/gals I have put a * are bloggers or tech entrepreneurs. 13 out of 25 are writing about tech or own online tech related business. Although categorizing Mark Zuckerberg and Kevin Rose related to tech isn't absolutely correct, but they are programmers and tech guys. The list just goes to show that geeks are still the internet's largest reader base and tech news/info is the biggest content on the web.

TechCrunch - FaceBook's Biggest Success Story

If you thought selling 1.6% stake of Facebook to Microsoft for $240 million (i.e valuation to $15 billion) or Mark Zuckerberg rejecting $1 billion from Yahoo was Facebook's biggest success story, then probably you are missing the point that success is never measured today, but reaped tomorrow.Facebook-TC

In my opinion, Facebook's biggest success story to date is TechCrunch and other technology sites that can't stop talking about Facebook and what's happening with Facebook. And I specifically mention TechCrunch is because it is "the big" tech blog of today. TechCrunch is #3 at technorati, #1 at Techmeme and probably the biggest tech site read by non-techies. I have immense respect for Michael Arrington and I'm not saying that they are biased for Facebook. Its just that Facebook seems to have gathered so much momentum and respect from everyone around, that TechCrunch ought to cover it as much as possible. Just to give you a hint on how much of Facebook features on TechCrunch, write "Facebook" on the search posts field and see the results for yourself.

Facebook is a big social networking website and a fast growing one as well. But like every other fast growing business, it has to focus on a larger market to keep up its growth rate. Nearly everyone would agree that publicity plays a big role in reaching a larger audience. Facebook's publicity through TechCrunch's genuine posts easily catches the eye. Every word about Facebook somehow plays a role in the publicity of Facebook and this is one reason why Facebook will continue to grow in the future.

One popular marketing mantra, "What you show is what sells", is very true in Facebook's glory. Social networking websites are hangouts for friends and what better way to reach the hangout than taking a lift in your friend's car to this new hangout. TechCrunch in many ways is like a friend to its reader base. When the reader gets his daily dose of Facebook as the place to hangout, your next job is to go chill out at Facebook, just like your friend advised. Be it negative or positive comments, it definitely sparks a curiosity in the reader's mind. And this curiosity is what will drive Facebook to grow in the future.

So don't be shocked if you see a story about Facebook being valued at some $25 billion. It's just because we all love to talk about the big things in life and with that they only seem to get bigger!!

Show Latest Blog Updates On Your Orkut Profile

Like most online Indians, I am also an Orkut user and have my share of social networking world. About a month or two back, Orkut updated its design and brought RSS feeds to follow the scrapbook and profile updates of orkut friends. They also started showing updates that friends make to their profile on the homepage.

Hmmm... nice features to keep track of what's happening to friends/psuedo-friends. I was interested in showing my orkut friends, the updates that I make on my blog. I wrote an RSS reader and autoupdater software that would do that for me.

But the worst thing was later discovered. I found out that orkut's webpage textfield only allowed max 61 chars... What crap!! This is surely a bug that orkut's webpage textfield has... Im sure they need to increase the maxlength for that field. There are a lot of pages that are more than 61 chars in length. Infact, all the permalinks from my blog posts were more than 61 chars

I think orkut should increase the size of the textfield. And allow use to display the updates using some RSS reader, or even better integrate Google Reader with Orkut!! Yeah...some Web 2.0!! :((

Google Makes A Digg-like Service

Google has started a new service called "Sharing Stuff". Its just like a host of other internet bookmarking/website sharing sites like Digg, Del.icio.us, Reddit etc... The site has a very basic look and is simple in its interface. Unlike Digg which is becoming a social networking site with its latest update, google's sharing is still just sharing!! Google provides a "javascript shareit", which can be dragged to a browser and when you click on that link, the current site which is open gets shared.

Neat, simple sharing. If you are into sharing your internet escapades with other people, this is something you'd want to look into. Go here and share your stuff!!
